| The American Association for
the Advancement of Science, is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science
around the world by serving as an educator, leader, spokesperson and professional association. In
addition to organizing membership activities, AAAS publishes the prestigious journal Science, as well
as many scientific newsletters, books and reports, and spearheads programs that raise the bar of
understanding for science worldwide. Founded in 1848, AAAS serves some 262 affiliated societies
and academies of science, serving 10 million individuals. Science has the largest paid circulation of
any peer-reviewed general science journal in the world.
AAAS seeks to "advance science and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people." To fulfill this mission, the AAAS has set these broad goals:
- Foster communication among scientists, engineers and the public;
- Enhance international cooperation in science and its applications;
- Promote the responsible conduct and use of science and technology;
- Foster education in science and technology for everyone;
- Enhance the science and technology workforce and infrastructure;
- Increase public understanding and appreciation of science and technology; and
- Strengthen support for the science and technology enterprise.
Dr. Thomas A. Gionis, President and Chief Executive Officer of Joseph and Gionis, LLC, was an invited
guest lecturer at the 87th Annual Meeting, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS),
Pacific Division. Dr. Gionis presentation was within the meeting section known as New Humanities and
Science Convergences. Dr. Gionis’ lecture was entitled “Clinical Research Ethics – International
Protection of Human Research Subjects; Seeking [and Demanding] Ethical Clarification [and
Manifestation],” which was a report of various original research conducted by Dr. Gionis as Chairman of
the Joint Study Committee on Clinical Research Ethics (JSCCRE). The JSCCRE is a joint cooperative
project of the Fulbright Academy of Sciences and the American Board of Healthcare Law and Medicine.

Dr. Gionis with Professor Patrick Nichelson. Professor Nichelson is Chairman, Department of Religious Studies, California State University-Northridge and is President of the California Faculty Association. Additionally, Professor Nichelson is an Ethicist for the American Association of Physician Specialists (AAPS), a national board certification organization for physicians in the United States (Dr. Gionis is a Founding Board Member of the American Board of Disaster Medicine of the AAPS).
